Someone underestimated Saint Francis’ softball team.
The Saints jumped out to an early lead and denied top-seeded Kamehameha from making its first trip to the HHSAA Division II title game with a 9-0 victory Friday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Six-time BIIF champion Kamehameha was held to just four hits, including doubles by Kiarra Lincoln and Jessica Cameros.
Cameros took the loss, pitching three innings, and Brooke Baptiste, Wednesday’ winner against Waipahu, worked the final three.
The unseeded Saints (10-5), the ILH champion, won for the third day in a row. Skye Ah Yat hit a first-inning grand slam and Sierrah Kupihea pitched six solid innings, striking out seven.
Kamehameha still has a chance to match its best finish at states when it takes on Kapaa at 2:15 p.m. Saturday for third at RWSS.
Radford 9, Kohala 4
Mahealani Hetrick hit a grand slam at McKinley High and the Rams overcame five errors to end the Cowgirls’ season.
Symphony Kauanoe didn’t get out of the first inning in taking the loss for Kohala (13-8). Mikayla Kekoa struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings.
Division I
Waiakea 6, Maui 1
Skylar Thomas and Johnacy Mackwelung hit home runs and Jourdan Perreira didn’t allow an earned run in a four-hit complete game as the Warriors earned the BIIF’s first win at states since Waiakea won in consolation play in 2009.
Thomas finished 3 for 3, hitting a two-run home in the second, and Mackwelung went deep with two aboard in the sixth.
Perreira walked two and struck out two for BIIF chamipion Waiakea (18-1), which can match its fifth-place finish of eight years ago when it faces Maryknoll at 2:15 pm. Saturday at McKinley.
